NMR and MRI experiments are typically conducted at the high magnetic fields  (> 1T)  produced by large superconductive magnets.

Our lab recently constructed an NMR spectrometer controlled by LabView, operating at a magnetic field of about 0.6 mT to be used with pre-polarized nuclei.

Michael Antonacci and Nick Bryden  built the entire spectrometer from off-the-shelf components for less than $20,000. Nick is currently using the spectrometer to measure the nuclear spins relaxivity of the 129-Xe isotope, and  converting the NMR spectrometer into an MR imager.
